Home insurance typically covers accidental damage to your home. Such policy would normally consist of four sections; Buildings, Contents, Valuables (also known as All Risks) and Liability.
Below is a short run down of these four insurance sections. If you have any questions please do call us, we’re here to help and guide you.
BUILDINGS
Buildings insurance provides insurance protection against damage for the building itself. There is a general misconception that the value to insure is the market value of the building. However, the correct value to insure is the rebuilding value which reflects the amount you would need to spend to rebuild your property and finish it to its present state, but without including the value of the land on which it is built.
CONTENTS
Contents insurance protects your home contents in the event of accidental damage. You need to be careful here as the cover is based on a ‘replacement value’ basis. This mean that notwithstanding what you paid for your contents when you bought them, the value to insure represents the purchase cost of a new, similar item today. This guide will help you establish the correct total contents value for your insurance.
VALUABLES
You have the option to insure your jewellery and other items on an ‘All Risk’ basis even when they are not inside your home, under the third section of your home insurance policy. Typically, this section covers jewellery, watches and photographic equipment. Each item needs to be disclosed and a valuation or purchase receipt obtained. This section can, at an additional cost, be extended to cover the items throughout Europe or Worldwide.
LIABILITY
Liability to third parties is automatically covered when you insure your home buildings. This covers your liability to third parties, whether these are your neighbours, or guests you may have invited to your home.
