TO HELP YOU ORGANISE AN ENJOYABLE AND TROUBLE-FREE TRIP, FOLLOW SOME SIMPLE RULES

• Passport – check the expiry date at least 2 months before your trip to make sure it will be valid for the entire duration of your journey.

• Check to see if you require any visas for your country of destination.

• Vaccinations – keep certificates and ensure you also have prescriptions and / or adequate supplies of any particular medicines that you need.

• Travel Reservations – ensure you allow enough time between connecting flights and keep airline tickets and list of frequent flyer numbers handy.

• Hotel Reservations – take along booking confirmation numbers as well as any emailed receipts.

• Travel insurance – take out insurance immediately upon booking flights and accommodation to enjoy the full benefits of the policy. You can also take out optional cover for winter sports or trip cancellation.

• Money, foreign currency, credit cards – make sure you have all these items before you travel and also in a secure place such as in a neck wallet, it’s also advisable to carry some spare cash with you in case of small purchases or emergencies.

• Driver’s licence – Do remember to take this but leave other unnecessary cards at home.

• Hard copy list with emergency numbers – May come in handy if you lose your phone or phone battery dies.

DO’S AND DON’TS BEFORE YOU LEAVE

• Arrange for someone to empty your mailbox regularly as an overflowing mailbox tells thieves you are not at home and you may end up returning to an empty house.

• If you’re motoring abroad with your own vehicle, ensure you are adequately insured. Maltese motor insurance provides the minimum cover required by the EU however this will not be enough if you have an accident. Nor will it cover you for theft, fire or damage to your vehicle. • Turn off computers, modems and any other equipment that does not need to be on.

• Check the refrigerator and discard any food that may spoil whilst you are away.

• Arrange for someone to water the plants and take care of pets; don’t forget to leave them your house keys and itinerary. It’s always a good idea that you let family or friends know your movements while you are away.

• Do not pack your travel documents or money in a suitcase that may get lost. Keep them in a wallet that you can access at all times.

• List what you require during your trip and pack appropriately; remember clothes including shirts, blouses, pants, dresses, underwear, hats, gloves, coats etc.; umbrellas or raincoats; toiletries, dental floss, toothbrush, nail clippers and file; contact lens preparations; cameras, batteries, rechargers, voltage converters; swimming suit, beach towels and sun block cream; mobile phone and charger.

• Ensure that your luggage is clearly labeled with a tag with your name, address and telephone number.

• Just before you leave, make sure all water taps are turned off and that the water in toilets that you may have flushed has stopped running. It is prudent to turn off the water main supply and if possible, the roof-top tank outlet.

DO’S AND DON’TS WHILST ABROAD

• Don’t leave your belongings unattended.

• Never leave valuables on show in your car and if you’re not wearing them, always leave valuables in a hotel safe or a safe deposit box.

• Keep money and documents with you when travelling.

• If you lose or have something stolen, report the incident to the local police and get written confirmation that you have done this.

• Inform your insurer of any losses as soon as possible.
