Here are a few tips that you may find useful.

• As soon as you can, phone us after the incident occurs. To get things moving, it is important to speak to us about what happened while everything is still fresh in your mind.

• Ask us for the relevant claim form. You will need to fill in a claim form where you should include as much detail as possible about what happened.

• Give us copies of all documentation related to the claim. It is a good idea to keep all of your insurance-related documents in an easily accessible folder in case you need to make a claim. The rule of thumb is that the more documentation you have to support your claim, the faster your claim can be processed.

• Do advise the authorities wherever appropriate.

• Where damage to another person or their property is concerned, never admit liability to anyone, and refer any correspondence received directly to us and unanswered.

• Be open and honest about the exact circumstances of the incident. This will help us guide you and process your claim in the best way possible. Wrong or missing information could lead to your claim being delayed or worse still, refused.

• Remember that you have a duty to report accidents even where they may not immediately lead you to make a claim. For instance, consider a motor accident where little damage appears to have been done and both parties depart the scene amicably. You should still report the incident. This is in case sometime afterwards the other driver discovers that there is damage to his/her vehicle and that you are at fault for it. Or worse, that he/she or a passenger have been hurt in the accident (something he/she may well not have noticed at the time).

• In the case of motor claims, you have the right to choose the garage where to repair your damaged vehicle. We do however recommend that you choose a garage that is on the list of approved Garages to standard MSA 1400:2006 by Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA). You can view this list by clicking here. If you choose a garage from this list, insurers will pay for the repairs directly. If you opt for a garage that is not on the list, then you will need to pay for all repairs yourself and then obtain reimbursement from the insurer.
